I want to talk about a different form of self self hatred that people don't pick up on. And that is the African American workaholic. That is another form of self hatred. Yeah, I said it! . . . .
Jermal Watson 00:48
So just, I don't think I almost lost my life. But there's one year, I never forget it. I worked myself to the point to where I got on stage, and was talking normal, and was supposed to start the first song and my entire body locked up. And you know, mind you, I love what I do. I love playing music. I love it. But what I love [turned into] work. It was work, it was a constant grind. . . .
Harry Turner 03:14
They have you believing that you must work yourself to death. To the point to where if you make it to retirement, you are so sick and beat up that you can't even enjoy your retirement. . . . because you believe that aristocratic mentality of, you must work yourself to death to achieve anything in life.
Jermal Watson 08:32
That's an interesting way to look at it. I never looked at it like that. That why it's called a TRAP and how people are trying to get out . . . it's not cannibalism, it's "well, let me kill you".
Harry Turner 13:06
And I know you want to fit in and I know you want to be loved. But again, understand what love is. Love is [NOT] conditional. . . . [and you are] becoming teenage fathers, or even young adult fathers, without having any sense of love for yourself and therefore cannot extend true love to your child.
I'm saying that I'm an educated man, and I can get on here and I can play that role. And I can play that facade, making sure that I keep it just soft enough and say the right words, the right code words, so that the right people hear it and then all of a sudden, BAM, overnight, I'm this instant success promoting that [expletive]. But that's not who I am . . . .
Jermal Watson 19:35
Seek counsel. Don't be afraid of it. And seek wisdom. Sometimes wisdom and counsel ain't always in the same person. So surround yourself around people who can help add to life
Harry Turner 19:56
"The past is history. The future is a mystery. And today's a gift, which is why it's called the present." As long as you have breath in your lungs, your life is a gift . . . . (specifically directed towards African-American Men) We love you. And I hope that you'll be a little bit more intentional about loving us back.
