America Has Affluenza
“Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.” – Epictetus
In this part of The Inner Rebellion: Calcination Series, the truth comes into focus about a sickness hiding in plain sight, Affluenza. It’s the belief that value is measured by what’s owned, the size of a bank account, or how shiny life appears on the outside.
Through the story Main Street and the Golden Ledger, it becomes clear how easily a community, and each person in it, can trade kindness for competition, connection for comparison. The truth is plain... this pursuit of “more” often leaves less of what truly matters.
There’s another way.
-
Measure life by what is given, not what is gained.
-
Celebrate the ones who heal, teach, and serve, even if they never make the Forbes list.
-
Reclaim the word “enough” as a source of peace, not limitation.
Join the rebellion. Step away from the altar of wealth, and start honoring the wealth of the human spirit. That is where the real gold is found. Like, follow, and share if this inspires you.
Gratitude
Affluenza
Affluenza is a social, emotional, and spiritual condition marked by the obsessive pursuit of wealth, status, and material possessions, often at the expense of mental health, relationships, and moral integrity. It rests on the belief that more money or “better” things will bring lasting happiness or personal worth.
The term blends affluence and influenza, reflecting how this mindset spreads like a cultural virus — subtly shaping values, fueling consumerism, and distorting the idea of success. Symptoms include chronic dissatisfaction, debt driven by status-seeking, envy, diminished empathy, and a tendency to measure people’s value by their net worth.
Affluenza thrives in environments where consumption is glorified, the wealthy are idolized, and social worth is tied to possessions rather than character. The cure begins with redefining success in terms of contribution, integrity, and connection, rather than accumulation.
